Therapeutic Interventions Practised at KACP

There is a confusing array of therapeutic approaches to choose from however, studies demonstrate that the quality of the relationship between therapist and client are among the most important factors in helping facilitate change.


Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)
Is an evidence-based short-term here and now therapy approved by The National Institute of Clinical Excellence (NICE) for treating depression, generalised anxiety, phobias, Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) Low self-esteem and eating disorders. CBT is a way of understanding how our thoughts, feelings and behaviour affect each other and learning skills to better manage how you feel about yourself, others and the world around you. Often six to twelve sessions can make a considerable difference


Integrative Therapy
Is the integration of distinct therapeutic models including Transactional Analysis which stresses the concept of Parent, Adult and Child (ego states) helping us to understand how we respond and react to others. A central concept is the idea that we may develop a life limiting script in early infancy which may unconsciously be influencing us today. The aim being to help change these early script messages. Gestalt Therapy works in the here and now with the whole of a client's experiences. Imagery and role play scenarios are often used in therapy sessions.


Psychodynamic Counselling/Psychotherapy
Is an in depth approach stressing that a painful situation in the present may have its roots in the past and that we may not be aware of this connection. Emphasis is placed upon the client's inner world unconscious motives and the relationship between therapist and client. Clients are encouraged to talk about childhood relationships with significant people helping us gain awareness and insight at a deeper level, giving us more options for change

Couple Therapy
Relationship therapy (often including psychosexual counselling) encourages couples to recognise repeating patterns of distress and to understand and manage troublesome differences that they are experiencing.


Mindfulness
Mindfulness is usually incorporated within other approaches and involves a specific way of learning to listen to our thoughts. Clients are helped to 'catch' the first thought and view it as just a thought and not fact. Helping to stop the escalation of negative thoughts gives us 'space' to re-orientate ourselves in the present moment.


Person Centred Therapy
PCT is termed a ‘non-directive’ approach as in its pure form PCT does not use therapeutic techniques but relies upon the personal qualities of the therapist to build a non-judgmental and empathic therapeutic relationship. By providing ‘core’ conditions including genuineness, unconditional positive regard and accurate empathy the client is presented with the opportunity to find congruence ‘actualising tendency’ within their self.


Psychosynthesis
Sometimes described as ‘psychology of the soul’. The aims and tasks of the Psychosynthesis therapist are to help enable the client to become aware of and work towards the elimination of conscious and unconscious conflicts and obstacles that block complete and harmonious personal development. Working with techniques from other therapeutic modalities with particular emphasis on inspired creativity, higher states of consciousness spirituality and human experiencing beyond the individual self.


Brief-Solution Focused Therapy
Clients are encouraged to focus positively on what they do well, to set goals and work out how to achieve them rather than ruminating on past problems. Clients can make good progress in three to four sessions.
